Jack Chapin is a Forensic Economist, President and Managing Partner of CHAPIN Associates Ltd. providing financial analytics, valuation, fraud examination, and expert testimony to lawyers representing clients throughout the litigation process. He has been a Litigation Services’ practice leader for two Big Four Firms since 1979. He formed his new firm in 1998 after reaching the mandatory retirement age for partners at Coopers & Lybrand LLP, now merged as PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he served as Partner-in-Charge, Litigations & Claims Services for Chicago and the Midwest.

Jack specializes in antitrust, intellectual property, consultants’ malpractice, breach of contract, telecommunications, liability analysis, valuations, dealer/franchise, post merger and acquisition disputes, damage claims analysis, IRS disputes and computer/software failure. He performs office of general counsel reviews. He has chaired over 60 arbitration panels in private matters as well as for the AAA, NASD, NFA and NYSE.

He teaches select Litigation Services seminar subjects for the ABA, AICPA, ASA and IMC USA nationally, as well as for several state and local societies. In addition, he lectures and teaches at select universities. He has authored book chapters, and writes the CHAPIN Associates Ltd. Litigation Services Review newsletter for attorneys.

Jack provides expert testimony at deposition, hearings, and trial.

Representative engagements for which he has been responsible include:
  • Performing analysis and testifying in several management consultant malpractice matters in which performance was at issue, as well as firm partnership dispute matters.
  • Refuting a $200 Million consequential damage claim developed by an economist in an insurance coverage suit relating to a mass tort claim.
  • Conducting general counsel office reviews, law department organization and reporting studies, including analysis of legal costs, and alternative approaches.
  • Developing a case management and operational plan to assist in planning resourses, budgeting, and tracking events for the multiple complex capital trials resulting from the 1980 riot at the Penitentiary of New Mexico.
  • Testifying in jury trials in two IP Lanham Act cases. Issues included false advertising, trade dress, unjust enrichment, and damages.
  • Performing financial analytics, pricing reviews, economic and statistical studies to refute plaintiff’s damage claims in several antitrust cases leading to expert testimony.
  • Testifying at deposition to refute plaintiff’s damage claim in an antitrust tying case in the electronics’ controls industry.
Mr. Chapin has over 40 years experience in various aspects of management consulting, telecommunications, information processing and litigation services. This includes management positions with AT & T and IBM as well as P & L responsibility with a bank facilities management company. Past key assignments include:
  • Managing the team that completed the On-line Real-time Branch Information Transaction (ORBIT) system for Household Finance Corporation.
  • Leading the group that computerized the network order wire input system for the Midwest Stock Exchange Service Corporation.
  • Serving as trial counsel while an officer in the U.S. Army for several court-martial proceedings.
Jack Chapin attended DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana and received his BSBA and MBA from the John M. Olin School of Business, Washington University, St. Louis. He was selected Class Marshall. He completed the Advanced Industry School of Banking and Finance at Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey as well as advanced management courses at IBM.

He is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a Certified Management Consultant (CMC), a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association, the Board of Arbitrators of the National Association of Securities Dealers, and the New York Stock Exchange; past National Chair of the Institute of Management Consultants USA, Inc., elected a Fellow (FIMC) in 1996; past National Co-chair, Council of Consulting Organizations, Inc.

He is a practicing member of the Licensing Executives Society, Inc. and the UK Academy of Experts (MAE).
